When it comes to grocery shopping, I get really excited about it to go out to shop some fresh ingredients available. I usually go to my local vegetable and meat market but when I need some exotic ingredients for any recipe I always prefer food hall, Linking road, Mumbai. Food hall can be described as the paradise for all the chefs, as one could find any ingredient from around the world. When I thought of making something I’ve never tasted or cooked before food hall was the only place came into my mind where I could find some unique ingredients.

As soon as I entered the shopping area, the place scented with fresh herbs and spices, and this aroma can bring smile on any person’s face who is culinary enthusiast. the vegetable section is divided into two parts one with all the local vegetables and other with imported vegetables which can’t be found locally.

I was searching for something unique in the imported vegetables area and there were so many vegetables new to me and then I came across this beautiful looking potato variety ‘purple ratta potato’ originating from South America.

After coming home, I started thinking of what to make out of these beautiful potatoes and I finally decided to slice it, fry it and it will eventually turn out into beautiful crisps.

After cutting the potato I was amazed to see how bright purple it was from inside, more starchy than normal potatoes, bitter in taste and had a strong earthy smelly to it. This was the raw part of the potato. (The colour of the potato was so as it could be seen in the picture below how the water has turned into purple).

After deep frying the potatoes, I seasoned it with salt, red chilli powder and some fresh parsley. It tasted phenomenal and the combination of fresh parsley with the potatoes was definitely the best thing. It was very crisp, looked beautiful and tasted little sweet, earthy and nutty. Potato crisps might taste similar to it but here the looks of the chips are totally different from each other. These crisps can be used as snacks and also we can use these as garnishes as they are aye appealing.

The potato was tasting bitter when it was raw and after cooking the bitterness was turned into slight sweetness which I noticed in my palate. I enjoyed the crisps along with my family. I would definitely try to make something new out of these potatoes like purple mash, purple roasted potatoes or purple French fries as the colour of the finished product is the most impressive and also it tastes good. I don’t think there was any flavour more or less appealing in the dish.

The blog writing experience has brought many changes into me as it helps me to research more about food and ingredients and also gives some creative ideas in my mind.
